Massage therapy organization launches online education program

Adults who are looking for a career in which they can be self-employed, may want to consider becoming a massage therapist. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that of the 122,400 employed massage therapists in 2008, about 57 percent worked for themselves.

Organizations such as Body of Work Books - a Florida-based publishing company - are launching online courses for professionals in this field in order to provide more education to individuals in this occupation. The company recently launched an online education program based on The Complete Guide to Injury Prevention and Ergonomics for Manual Therapists.

Coursework for the program is designed to cover information on proper body mechanics, how to use ergonomics to create a healthy workspace, emotional issues that increase injury risk and modifying techniques to reduce stress to the therapists' body.

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and the Florida Board of Massage has approved the course for 10 continuing education credits.
