Authorities will Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, have recently announced that the school will soon allow construction management students to complete their degree almost entirely online.

In the fall semester of 2010, the university will launch two initial online course offerings, including introduction to construction management and introduction to commercial construction. Lamar will then offer two additional classes each semester until all 19 construction management courses are available online.

"The purpose is to expand the program so that more non-traditional students can have access," said Steven McCrary, director of the Reese Construction Management Program, who will be running the online initiative for the university.

"Many of our construction management students are working in the construction field and need the flexibility online courses provide," he added.

Students enrolled in the program will also have the opportunity to spend time in an on-campus laboratory setting where they can apply their online knowledge to real-world construction situations.

Approximately 4.6 million students were enrolled in at least one online course in the fall of 2008, according to the 2009 Sloan Survey.
