College receives funding for online courses for military personnel
Officials at Bismarck State College have announced that the school will receive additional federal funding to provide online courses to members of the military.
This year, BSC will be appropriated $500,000 by the federal government to help support military personnel who are pursuing a college degree. Last year, the school obtained a $400,000 grant for a similar project.
"Take a young sailor moving all the time ... signing up at college is tough," said BSC president Larry Skogen, according to the Bismarck Tribune. The online format allows members of the armed forces to take classes and earn their degree from anywhere in the world, he added.
The school's recent partnership with the military has also allowed veterans to earn a bachelors degree after their tour of duty. Last semester, BSC had 175 military veterans enrolled in degree programs.
Students can earn their degree in power plant technology, nuclear power technology, electrical transmission systems technology and criminal justice.
Online education can be a flexible option for students who are looking to earn their degree but find it difficult to attend traditional on-campus classes.
