Art school graduates create ads, technology for Apple
Graduates of online distance learning programs have as many career opportunities as degree holders from traditional campus-based schools. Students who earn online bachelors degrees may have the opportunity to work for major U.S. companies.
For example, two graduates from the Academy of Art University work behind the scenes at Apple, creating ad campaigns and improving computer programs.
One alumnus was the creative director behind Apple's Mac vs. PC ads. The campaign eventually won numerous awards, including a Cannes Gold Lion, and was named Campaign of the Decade by Adweek. The more than 60 ads personify Mac computers as young and hip, while PCs are shown as boring and outdated. In addition to awards, the ads have received millions of views on YouTube.
Another alumnus who works on Apple technology played a significant role in creating the latest generation of iPods. The art school graduate was lead designer on over 55 iPod patents. The graduate has since moved on to Yahoo to work on mobile applications for the iPhone and iPad.
Art school degree holders can find jobs in graphic design, fine arts and multimedia animation as well as art direction.
Last year, the average wages for a graphic designer were $42,400 per year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
