College launches online degree program in homeland security

Adults who wish to launch a career in government service may want to consider enrolling in a homeland security degree program. Professionals who work in this field could potentially be employed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the CIA, the Coast Guard or Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Aspiring students could enroll in Central Penn College's online bachelor's degree program in homeland security management. The program was designed for students who are seeking an education in emergency management, information security and intelligence analysis in a flexible online format.

Officials from the school are continuously working to improve this program by attending development workshops at the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS). The number of institutions offering degrees and certificates in this field continues to grow and CHDS is working to ensure academic efficiency in these programs. At the workshops, officials learn how to improve course offerings by looking at how other nations handle homeland security, and comparing technology and interdisciplinary approaches. Central Penn will be one of the first schools in the country to take information from CHDS and apply it to the curriculum.

"Central Penn College's program is a great example of the level – both in curriculum and core competencies – that other programs should aspire to," said Stan Supinski, director of partnership programs at the CHDS.

The BLS reports that professionals in this industry have average starting salaries of $31,209 per year.
