Under the direction of chefs and cooks, food prep workers are responsible for the before-and-after process of serving food. Before, they chop, weigh and measure ingredients that make salads, soups and sauces. After the meal, they clean work areas, utensils, dishes and silverware.

The estimated 351,000 new jobs coming down the pipeline are spurred by a growing population, higher salaries and busier lifestyles leading more people to eat out in casual family establishments and overall indulge in the booming service economy.
