Careers in the Community and Social Services sector involve work with both public and private institutions. These industries revolve around the "helping" occupations: Social Workers, School Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Substance Abuse Social Workers. These roles generally begin with an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university.
School Counselor: A school counselor works with elementary through high school-aged children. Their role is primarily to guide and counsel youth in areas of career choice, academics, and personal and social development.
Substance Abuse Counselor: A substance abuse counselor studies addiction and chemical dependency, and learns the methods used to diagnose and treat those suffering from addiction.
Social Worker: A social worker is employed by many types of agencies, with both for-profit and non-for-profit associations. The nature of the work can include assisting mentally ill and disabled persons go about their everyday lives, or addressing and working to solve domestic violence and unemployment within families.
